Sweet potato casserole is my favourite part of Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. It encompasses my love of carbs while also tasting like dessert.  The topping is made with brown sugar, butter and pecans, and it seeps into the sweet potato.  It tastes like HEAVEN!  Here's the recipe:

Sweet potatoes (we use four)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup melted butter
1 cup chopped pecans
4 tbsp milk

Steps:
1. Cook sweet potato
2. Make topping - combine brown sugar, pecans and butter into a small mixing bowl
3. When sweet potatoes are cooked, mash then scoop them into a small casserole dish
4. Pour on topping
5. Put in the oven on 350 degrees for 30 minutes

Voila!  You'll love it.
Cheers,

Fifth Annual Wine Buffet

After a one month hiatus, I am happy to be back in the blogosphere! Moving to Toronto and taking Public Relations has been a fantastic experience, but one that comes with a CRAZY amount of school work. I was glad to get home for the holidays, but even more EXCITED to host the Fifth Annual Wine Buffet!

What is a wine buffet? It's a time to come together with friends and share as many bottles of wine as possible! Throughout the night we drank, ate, played Cards Against Humanity, did a gift exchange and caught up on each others lives. It was the first time in over a year we were all in the same room, so you can only imagine the noise. Take a look at a the pictures, and if you're ever wondering what to do with your friends I suggest hosting a wine buffet.

While I was home for Thanksgiving, my best friends and I went to The Stubborn Goat Gastropub in Halifax for brunch.  I walked in and was pleasantly surprised with the decor. It's decorated with brick, dark woods and goats strategically placed throughout the pub.

I had chicken and waffles, and they were absolutely incredible! My best friends had eggs benedict, which came on fresh biscuits instead of english muffins.  The food was delicious, and of course we had to celebrate my homecoming with mimosas!

This is definitely a spot to check out if you're ever in Halifax.  I can't wait to go back and try their supper menu.
Cheers,

A tourist in my own city

I left Toronto over the Thanksgiving weekend, and flew back to my East coast city of Halifax. I was so excited to see all my friends and family, and to eat the best meal of the year.

Sunday morning, my Mother and I decided to be tourists in our own city. We started our adventure on the top of Halifax, at Citadel Hill, then worked our way down to the waterfront.

This is Argyle St., where an assortment of restaurants, pubs, and cute stores are located.  There is even a theatre that puts on amazing plays and musicals, called Neptune Theatre.

If anyone was wondering why my little car is an automatic, it's because of hills like the one in the picture above.  This isn't the steepest hill in Halifax, and you won't catch me driving a standard anytime soon.

These are skyscrapers, Halifax style!

This is my favourite spot in the city.  The Old Triangle Pub is a picturesque Irish pub with amazing food and great beer on tap.  My friends and I go to this pub whenever we're in the downtown area.

My Mother and I finished our adventure like typical Haligonians, with beer at our favourite Irish pub.  It was very refreshing to walk around the city and take in the sights.  I take the beauty of Halifax for granted.  It took moving half way across the country for me to truly understand the beauty and pull of Halifax.

Halifax is a must see for anyone wanting to travel within Canada.  For more details on what to do in Halifax, head over to the Destination Halifax site for tourist tips.

Also, make sure to check back throughout the week for more on my trip to Halifax.
Cheers,

Shondaland: Thursday Night Takeover

If you're reading this, I need to assume you know all about my spirit animal Shonda Rhimes.  She's created a few of the most captivating and ADDICTING television shows I've ever had the pleasure of watching.  Recently, Shonda has taken over a full night of Thursday TV.  Her shows are featured on two networks, but run for three hours straight.  If you're not watching Shonda TV on Thursday ... what are you doing?

I had the pleasure of hosting TV night at my new apartment.  My friend, Maral, and I snacked on spinach dip and red wine. We're both mildly obsessed with Shonda and are MASSIVE fans of her television shows.  We even agree that Private Practice was better than Greys Anatomy (sorry if you disagree, but you're entitled to your wrong opinion).

I've been a loyal Greys Anatomy fan since the show began in 2005. It may not be as interesting as its early years, but I'm emotionally attached to the characters and am madly in love with Avery (but, who isn't in love with this BEAUTIFUL man).  Also on the docket for the Shonda Rhimes Thursday Night Takeover was Scandal, her new hit How To Get Away With Murder and a lot of chit-chat during commercials!

Also, check out Maral's blog, Maral and the City.  I'm a HUGE fan.
Cheers,

Benefit Cosmetics: The long road to makeup paradise

They're Real! mascara / Boi-ing concealer / POREfesional primer / Girl Meets Pearl highlighter / They're Real! push-up liner /
Benefit Cosmetics curate amazing products that are sold at high-end stores, like Sephora and Hudson’s Bay Company.  Their beautiful packaging and labeling emphasizes their feminine brand, while drawing inspiration from iconic women. Benefit stands behind their quality products. They go further than the average cosmetic organization and work to empower women around the globe.  They’ve even named their customers “Benebabes.”

Shopping for skincare and makeup products can be daunting.  I was ecstatic when I found products that worked well for my skin.  Below are my favourite Benefit products:

Girl Meets Pearl highlighter has the perfect amount of sparkle and shimmer without making your skin look too shiny.  This is not an essential product, but it’s one I enjoy using on special occasions.

Boi-ing concealer is perfect for hiding tired eyes.  As a student, this is extremely important.  Caffeine is essential for PR students, but this concealer gives the illusion I’ve slept the required eight hours (which doesn’t normally happen).

I recently purchased They’re Real! push-up liner.  Getting use to the handle of the pen was difficult, and the applicator is tricky, but I’ve finally mastered the push-up liner.

POREfessional primer is silky, lightweight and can be used before or after applying makeup.  I keep it in my purse for quick beauty touch-ups.

My favourite Benefit product is They’re Real! mascara.  This mascara enhances eyelashes, giving the impression you’re wearing false lashes!  I’ve re-purchased this product three times, which is the longest I’ve gone using one type of mascara.

With a tumultuous skin care history, I need lasting and quality-oriented products, along with items approved for sensitive skin.  I’ve hit the jackpot with Benefit Cosmetics and I'm a benebabe for life!
Cheers,

Skor Squares

I love sweets!  If I could have cake every meal of the day, I would.  I don't think I will ever get sick of brownies, cupcakes, candy, skor squares .... oh goodness I need to go to the store and get a treat!  RESIST Bhreagh!

To celebrate my one year in the blogosphere I made my all time favourite treat- Skor squares with cream cheese icing.  I haven't used a recipe for skor squares in years because there is only three ingredients; skor bits, ritz crackers and sweetened condensed milk.  Here is how to procure this AH-MAH-ZING dish.

Firs things first- pre-heat your oven to 375 degrees and grease your pan (I use an 8x8 pan).  You will need to crush your ritz crackers to the smallest size possible.  I usually leave them in the bag and start smashing, but be careful not to bust your bag.  If you would rather crush your crackers in a bowl then do so.  Once they're crushed, pour them in a bowl, add sweetened condensed milk and almost a full bag of skor bits (You need to save some skor bits to garnish the top of your squares after you've added icing).  Mix together these three ingredients then add them to your pan.  Throw them in the oven for approximately 12 minutes, or until the edges appear darker than the middle.

While your squares are cooking you can prepare the icing.  I haven't used a recipe for cream cheese icing in a very long time (I sense a pattern with the no recipe thing, but I swear I don't wing it .... often).  Here is a great recipe for cream cheese icing from Kraft.

When your squares are done in the oven, let them cool for about an hour.  Once they're cool (the bottom of the pan is NOT HOT) you can add your icing.  Smooth it over the top and garnish with the remaining skor bits.  Using cream cheese icing is not required but, in my opinion, it makes the squares taste like heaven!

I promise you won't regret your decision to bake these squares ... or you will but it's totally worth the splurge!  Also, can we take the time to appreciate how COOL my plates are.

Cheers,

Bhreagh

Happy One Year!

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of Bhreagh Who.  This past year was incredible!  I grew, explored and even moved half way across the country.  I'm in a school program that's a lot of work, but it's work I love.  My year at Humber PR will likely be one of the most intense and challenging times of my life, but with the help of my new friends (who will be keeping me sane) there's no where to go but up!

I celebrated with my favourite snack, a glass of red wine and homework!  These skor squares are so easy (I'll post the recipe next week).

I'll be forever grateful to my followers.  Thank you so much for all your kind messages.  Here's to another successful year at Bhreagh Who!
Cheers,

Bhreagh

Everyday, on my way to school, I drive past a cute ice cream/candy store called Ice Cream Junction.  I decided to head over to the store after school with a friend and see what they had available.  My friend and I were plesantly surprised when they had an excessive amount of candy and incredible ice cream flavours.  Now, I'm not a huge ice cream fan but when I see red velvet ANYTHING ... I get excited!  My friend and I both tried this flavour and were so happy because it was unbelievable!  I highly recommend this adorable ice cream store to anyone in the Etobicoke area.  They also have a location in The Junction for anyone living closer to, or in, the city.

Cheers,

The view from my apartment is magnificent at sunset, especially after a day filled with rain, sun, wind and heat. If this weather doesn't remind me of home I don't know what will.

Happy Monday!
